Today's Nisab, the least you hold for a lunar year before Zakat is due: 595 g of silver or 85 g of gold.

Updated 6 Nov 2026. Silver is up 4.0% and gold is up 3.8% since yesterday's close.

The same weight for 1,300 years

In the 690s the caliph Abd al-Malik had new coins minted: gold dinars of 4.25 g and silver dirhams of 2.975 g, with glass weights to check them. Scholars still count the Nisab in these coins: 20 dinars, or 200 dirhams.

  • A small gold dinar with three lines of Kufic script in the centre and a ring of script around the edge
Gold dinar minted under the caliph Abd al-Malik, 697-698. The Nisab is 20 of these.
  • The reverse of the same gold dinar, also inscribed in Kufic script
The back of the same dinar. Twenty of them weigh 85 g.
  • A worn silver dirham with three lines of Kufic script in the centre and a ring of script around the edge
Silver dirham minted in Surraq, in what is now southwestern Iran, under the caliph Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik, 716-717. The Nisab is 200 of these.
  • The reverse of the same silver dirham, with five lines of Kufic script
The back of the same dirham. Two hundred of them weigh 595 g.
  • A small pale blue glass coin weight stamped with Arabic script
Glass coin weight, 808-810, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

How it's worked out

  1. First, the coins are weighed.

    20 dinars × 4.25 g = 85 g of gold. 200 dirhams × 2.975 g = 595 g of silver. Both weights are valid; use the one your scholar follows.

  2. Then, today's price is put on each gram.

Silver USD 1.6628 a gram, gold USD 131.3866 a gram.

From the international spot prices per troy ounce (31.1035 g): silver USD 51.72, gold USD 4,086.58. Refreshed once a day, last 6 Nov 2026.

  3. So today's Nisab is

    USD 989.37in silver: 595 g × USD 1.6628

    USD 11,167.86in gold: 85 g × USD 131.3866

Is Zakat due on what you hold?

The calculator also takes off debts and counts shares and business stock.

USD 75.00 is due

By the silver Nisab of USD 989.37. It is below the gold Nisab of USD 11,167.86, so if your scholar uses gold, nothing is due yet.
